Commentaries & Blog Posts

Columunist and Blogger

Commentary writer for the Vail Daily in Vail, Colorado from 2001 through 2021, where he received the Colorado Press Association Award for ‘Best Serious Column Writing.

Butch has been making weekly blog posts since he stopped writing for the Vail Daily Newspaper and moved to Tucson, AZ

Writing History

Shortly after 9/11 Butch wrote a letter to the editor of the Vail Daily Newspaper in Vail Colorado, who responded by asking Butch if he would write a weekly column for the newspaper.  For twenty years his commentary brought a fresh perspective, combined with some libertarian wit, and moral clarity and was awarded “Best Commentary Writer” by the Colorado Writer’ Association in 2019.

His commentaries are read by people across the U.S., in Europe, and he’s even received a response to one of his posts from Shanghai, China.  He strives to offer ideas and opinions that encourage readers to look at the world from “a slightly different perspective.”

Butch moved from the Vail Valley in 2023 and now resides in Tucson, Arizona with his wife Bobbi and their Berna-doodle, Molly.   With his Vail Daily writing days in the rearview mirror, he posts a weekly blog focusing on politics, culture, language and life in these United States.

Commentary & Voice

“In many cases, the best ‘present’ a man can give to a woman is just to ‘be present.’ … ‘Being present’ doesn’t mean being there physically — it means being emotionally present.”

“In the 14th and 15th centuries people married in June … brides carried a bouquet of flowers to hide body odor.”

“The World Court … three fourths of the nations endorsing the court do not subscribe to trial by jury — so just how prudent would it be for the U.S. to become a member?”

These examples illustrate Butch’s mix of humor, historical context, wit, and philosophical critique.

Beyond Intellectually Shallow Thinking

When thinking about what to write about today, I happened upon an old quote from the world of baseball.  Some quotes don’t just age badly; some are so ignorant they are hard to believe—not because the future surprised someone, but because the speaker never understood...

Trophic Cascades, Wolves, and the Cost of Taxing Success

The Encyclopedia Britannica defines a trophic cascade as an ecological phenomenon in which changes at the top of a food chain ripple downward, reshaping an entire ecosystem in ways that are often unintended and initially unseen. Put plainly: changes made at the top...

When Speech is Restricted Democracy becomes a Facade.

The First Amendment is the beating heart of American democracy, giving us the right to speak, think, question, criticize, worship, and organize.  And any attempt to narrow those liberties strikes at the core of who we are and how we govern ourselves Meanwhile and...

Seizing the Narrative

The purpose of I.C.E. (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement) is to enforce federal laws governing border control, customs, trade, and immigration.  ICE was created in 2003 under the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) after the September 11 attacks with the...

The Hypocrisy of the Left Knows no Bounds

Sometimes I’ll run across an opinion piece that’s so spot on it must be shared.   So, today I’m including a link to “Me Too for Me, but Not for Thee” by Judd Garrett - https://juddgarrett.substack.com/?utm_source=chatgpt.com Garrett begins his article by dialing back...

Theater with Dire Consequences

When An Inconvenient Truth was released in 2006, it was not presented as a speculative documentary.  It was framed as settled science and a moral imperative; pretty heady stuff considering the source.  Al Gore did not merely argue that climate change deserved...

Obamacare Subidies

In a recent post Jonathan Turley opined about the growing disaster inside Britain’s National Health Service — a warning sign for any nation tempted by the political sugar high of government-run healthcare....

Appeasing Dictators

If you’re like most Americans, you may be wondering why Donald Trump has chosen to confront Venezuela so aggressively. While we don’t know what goes on behind closed doors in the Oval Office, it’s clear this dispute extends beyond just narco-trafficking and illegal...

Authentic Leadership

Recently, a very dear friend and squadron mate from Vietnam sent me an article by Judd Garrett titled 4-Dimensional Chess. I read Garrett often because he is insightful and has a strong grasp of history.  I largely agree with his central premise: Donald Trump views...

When Language Stops Reflecting the Reality Before Our Eyes

English is a remarkable language, and I consider myself lucky to have grown up speaking it. Today, it also serves as the world’s primary lingua franca — a shared language that enables communication across borders and cultures. It has become the dominant tongue of...
