The deal that President Trump offered to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday was absolutely brilliant, and frankly we should be amazed that Zelenskyy rejected it. A U.S – Ukrainian economic agreement that was to include shared mineral rights, would have given the United States a ‘vested interest’ in protecting Ukraine against further Russian aggression. Zelenskyy is not a stupid man, so I don’t understand why he does not see the logic of this. Additionally, such a deal would keep Ukraine’s rare earth minerals in Ukraine and out of Russian or Chinese hands, and even a thug like Putin will think twice about being overly aggressive with strong American economic interests in Ukraine.
As I wrote on Saturday, we need look no further than how Putin did not respond after Trump’s cruise missile barrage in 2017. Recall, Putin tried to embarrass Trump thru his proxy Bashir Assad when Assad gassed his own people. Trump responded by launching a battery of Tomahawk missiles and destroying the airbase where the gas attack originated including the death of any number of Russian advisors. If there’s anything bullies understand it’s strength. Meanwhile, the democrats are criticizing Trump for “failing to agree with an ally” and thus must taking Putin’s side. What a crock. Common sense dictates not to antagonize the person you’re trying to sit down and negotiate with – geez, are Trump’s critics on this matter dense or is this just more TDS from non-critical thinking minds.
Zelensky wanted a security agreement guaranteed by the United States before agreeing to a peace deal. But not only was that putting the cart before the horse, a peace deal wasn’t even on the table yet. The framework for that deal was to be the economic link between Ukraine and the U.S., that Zelenskyy derailed in front of the world.
To successfully engage Putin who has 700,000 troops in Ukraine and and six thousand nuclear warheads at his disposal, there can be no daylight between the Ukrainian and U.S. positions. But Zelenskyy may as well of used a heart surgeon’s rib spreader to separate Ukraine from the U.S. in the Oval Office last week. Now, Putin will need to don sunglasses when looking at that relationship. Not a good move Volodymyr.
Another aspect of the matter I’ve not heard mentioned by either the legacy media or the president’s critics is that Zelenskyy canceled the presidential election in Ukraine because of the war, which to be fair, is allowed under the Ukrainian constitution. However, does anyone believe Zelensky would have canceled the election if he knew he would have been re-elected?
Volodymyr Zelenskyy is a patriot. He’s a man who loves his country and is fighting for its survival; and from this perspective, he certainly deserves another term in office. Zelenskyy has stood toe to toe against the Russian bear for three long brutal years, but bravery alone doesn’t always yield positive results. An effective leader also needs a measure of political acumen, which Zelensky lacked when he overplayed his hand last Friday in the Oval Office.
