This is going to be a long blog post because I have a lot to get off my chest. I’ll begin with a quote from political commentator and social theorist Thomas Sowell. “That people on the political left have a certain set of opinions, just as people do in other parts of the ideological spectrum, is not surprising. What is surprising, however, is how often the opinions of those on the left are accompanied by hostility and even hatred.”
I respect Mr. Sowell’s opinions and quote him frequently, but this is one time I’m going to disagree, and for two reasons, first what we see emanating from the Left isn’t surprising at all, and secondly, Mr. Sowell was being kind when he didn’t precede the term hatred with the word blind.
But even blind hatred doesn’t fully describe the extent of the malediction directed toward the former president. Comedienne, Kathy Griffith shamefully hoisted his bloodied mock severed head, while the actor Robert Di Niro received a standing ovation at the Tony Awards in New York for attacking him. Appearing at New York’s Radio City Music Hall, De Niro declared: “I’m gonna say one thing. Fuck Trump.” As the applauding audience rose to their feet, De Niro continued: “It’s no longer down with Trump. It’s fuck Trump.”
But why would Griffith and Di Niro act out like children unless they were part of the mindless left-wing paroxysm? I mean, what upset them so? Gas was selling at $2.25/gal, the annual inflation rate hovered near 2%, and the administration had just orchestrated a ground-breaking 57-nations peace agreement in the Middle East as a bulwark against Iran.
Meanwhile, Trump had also punished both Putin and Assad while sending a clear message to China’s President Xi, who was visiting the Mar-a-Lago when Trump ordered the Navy to retaliate against the Shayrat airbase in Syria with a 59-Tomahawk missile strike that killed many of Assad’s soldiers and their Russian advisors who conducted the brutal chemical attack on Syrian civilians. Gee, one would think Di Niro might have said, “Hey, nice job Mr. President; fuck Putin, Assad and Xi.”
But if there was a single action, just one moment in time that epitomized the Left’s ignoble mien, it was when Nancy Pelosi ripped up Donald Trump’s State of the Union Address with nary a word of condemnation from her congressional cohorts—America should have been embarrassed, but the left is beyond embarrassment. We should also find it interesting that the last American president to experience such animas was Abraham Lincoln. As former N.Y. Yankee legend Casey Stengel might say, “Look it up!”
Meanwhile, liberals plumb new depths of incivility daily, and frankly, I don’t see a conciliatory way forward within the current the milieu of woke ideology. We’re all familiar with the metaphorical story of the frog that when placed into a pot of boiling water will immediately jump out, but if that same frog is put into a pot of tepid water, which is then brought to a slow boil, it will not perceive the danger of the ever-increasing temperature and will be boiled alive. Folks, that is Joe Biden’s America in a nutshell, we are being boiled alive by the cancel culture and woke ideology.
But what was threatening the Left since the day Trump was elected, what did they believe Donald Trump was going to do to warrant such odium? Merriam-Webster defines odium as “the general or widespread hatred or disgust directed toward someone as a result of their actions,” so, what were the specific actions of Donald Trump that incurred such malediction?
I’ve asked liberals that question – their answers were predictable, “He’s a threat to our democracy.” Yet, they fail to explain how the 1,000 unarmed malcontents who broke into the Capitol on January 6th, were a greater threat to our democracy than the twenty-eight million (FBI estimate) who participated in the BLM riots of 2020 that left 37 dead, $2,000,000,000 in property damage and more than 2,000 police officers injured.
What did the 1,000 loosely organized rioters do that was so bad that it headlined the evening news for six-hundred and thirty-seven consecutive days? And how could the rioters have co-opted five million federal government employees, both houses of congress, nine Supreme Court Justices, the CIA, FBI and CDC bureaucracies, a half million postal workers, all our OSHA inspectors, and the entire Departments of Treasury, Education, Defense, Energy and Transportation, etc., etc.? Let’s be clear, the phrase, “threat to our democracy” is a bumper-sticker the Left has made into a rallying cry for those who rely on the NY Times to do their thinking for them.
The other aspect of Trump Derangement Syndrome my liberal acquaintances never seem to mention is how the Left, abetted by a dishonest media had been clamoring for Trump’s head since the day he won the Republican nomination; from the Washington Post speculating his impeachment on the morning of his inauguration through the Russian collusion hoax and two phony impeachments.
I once asked a Trump-hating Jewish friend (former friend now) how he would respond if I told him I thought the Holocaust was a fabrication. He responded, “You would not be my friend anymore.” Well, that’s precisely how I feel about people who abide this blind hatred for the former president. And frankly, except for family, I’ve eliminated just about every irrational Trump-hating liberal from my circle of friends–life is too short to countenance such absurdity.
If someone didn’t like the construction of a border wall or America’s energy independence, while I may disagree with that thinking, it’s certainly an individual’s prerogative to hold that position. If they didn’t like fact that his foreign-born wife spoke multiple languages, that’s fair too, there is no law against how someone feels.
So, it seems the primary charge against Trump is the one against his personality and his style. But hating someone for being coarse and indecorous or making more than a few outlandish statements, is in a word, “Irrational!” Besides, as compared to what? What we see & hear from the Left regarding former President Trump, is unprecedented. But sadly, it is the “abjectly irrational” who currently control all the levers of power in Washington. It’s been said people get the government they deserve, so perhaps America’s woke chickens are coming home to roost.
Quote of the day: “What socialism, fascism and other ideologies of the left have in common is an assumption that some very wise people—like themselves—need to take decisions out of the hands of lesser people, like the rest of us, and impose those decisions by government fiat.”—Thomas Sowell.
